The Battle
By Press Barnhill
Reviewed by Craig Ruhl
This is the first book by Press Barnhill that I have read. The Battle is a novel about a group of Christian prayer warriors on a cruise ship. As the story unfolds, the group encounters a variety of nusual challenges, including spiritual warfare. The author explores the concepts of Healing Prayer Ministry and Simple Effective Prayer. They are integral to the major theme of the book. This is the second book in the Freedom In Healing Series, but the reader does not have to have read the first to benefit from or enjoy The Battle. I particularly like the way Press Barnhill handles the subject of Spiritual Warfare in his book. Through the fictional characters, we can
recognize and often feel the pain and conflict we all are subject to in our lives. Interestingly, the freedom provided by prayer exampled in the book readily applies in the reader’s life.
The Battle has excellent character development and dialog because of Press Barnhill’s writing style. Although a work of fiction, the story has a sound biblical foundation. I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it as well as the series.

Rivers of Hope is not just a journey of personal testimony, it is also an encouraging and uplifting message for families going through or contemplating the adoption process. In addition, I believe it is a great read for pastors who may struggle in their ministries and need to know they are not alone. This is the story of a family remaining faithful through a series of personal hardships and trials. Steve Wormer tells of the highs and lows, the successes and the failures he and his wife lived through. From miscarriages to miracles, the Wormer family moved through the heartbreaking hurt to realize everlasting hope. I like the casual way Steve tells the story, weaving lifetime events with biblical truths and foundation. Reading this book is like sitting across from the author over cups of coffee as he tells the stories.

I am so excited to be offering this review of A Tree For Chris! Karen told me this story many years ago and I am so proud to see the book published in print. This is such an endearing story. That it is a true tale of the author’s son and his special Christmas tree makes it even more special. I know that 3-year-old, who is now almost 37 and has a young son of his own. I can picture him picking out the perfect tree and his expressions as he tells us why it is just so right for him. I invite you to join in the tradition Karen and Chris share with us in this book.

Each of the daily sections starts with a basic premise followed by several Bible verses for grounding oneself, followed by journaling prompts and thought-provoking questions designed to probe and uncover areas where we may struggle. Reflection, prayer, and thanksgiving all play a part in this guide. 52 Weeks of Strength for Men

This devotional book is set up a little differently than others I have recently used. It is divided into weekly sections, as the title implies, each containing a devotional message and suggested Bible passages for each day’s study. As I used it in my morning devotion time, I formed a habit of re-reading the devotion and then considering the meaning in light of the Bible verses for that day. By the end of the week, I felt immersed in the study and much more receptive to God’s Word. At the end of each week’s section, there are questions provided for reflection and application. This is very useful, as I take one question each day to ponder and journal my thoughts. I am several weeks into the book and am enjoying this wonderful addition to my devotion time. This book will make a great tool for small groups and individual use.

The last story in this book is titled, Christ in the Common. That nicely sums up what it is all about. The author and I share the belief that a coffee shop is a common place where one may encounter God and witness His wonder through experiences and interaction with people. Not all the stories in this book take place in a coffee shop, but they are consistent in showing how God shows up in everyday events.
Nathan Ingram has a knack for storytelling. His depiction of human interaction and life events and how they relate to scriptural teaching is enjoyable and relaxing. Our Foothills III
Another Anthology by the Foothill Writers Reviewed by Craig and Karen Ruhl This is the third anthology we have read written by the Foothill Writers Group. We know several of the writers personally and have great respect for the group and their talents, especially the tales and knowledge of the area we live in that they share through their stories, poems, humor, and more. This volume is especially fun in that, along with sections filled with short stories, anecdotes, and tales, the group added poems, prayers, recipes, and a special treat called Road Trippin’ Around the Foothills. The Our Foothills series of anthologies is a wonderful read, not only for us local to the area, but it is especially interesting for those who have visited or are planning a visit to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the surrounding foothills. The Ghost of Erraid
By Fran Brady Reviewed by Craig Ruhl My wife and I are lovers of lighthouses, and this period tale of a lightkeeper’s family was right up my reading alley. The story takes place in the 1920s on the Isle of Erraid in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Fran Brady does an excellent job of developing the characters, some of which are quite intriguing. I feel the book was very well researched, and the storyline flowed evenly and smoothly. The level of detail the author provides serves to enhance the story and not bog it down. Although the description of mental illness and what would be considered spousal and child abuse today was difficult to read at times, it did not put me off from enjoying the read. Having finished, The Ghost of Erraid, I am very interested in reading more from Fran Brady. We are pleased to recommend The Ghost of Erraid to our Faith On Every Corner readers. |

Joy in Jesus: Forays in Philippians
By Jeremy Hoover
Reviewed by Craig Ruhl
Jeremy Hoover leads the reader on an insightful journey through Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi. The subject is Joy—how do we get it, keep it, and pass it on? The message of both this book and the original biblical letter is that our joy comes from a knowledge of and a relationship with Jesus Christ. This book is also a call to discipleship and following the call to follow Jesus. The author concludes that besides scholarly learning and prayer, we also should pursue a people-oriented faith. That is what Jesus instructed us to do—go throughout the world joyfully preaching and teaching the Good News to the people we meet along the way. This book helps the reader find their joy and share it with others.
Joy in Jesus: Forays in Philippians is well written in a conversational style that teaches and encourages the reader to dig deeper into their personal joy in knowing Jesus Christ as their Savior. As a wonderful bonus, the author includes a chapter titled Developing Intimacy with God.

Hannarich shares many of her own experiences, trials, and joys with her own in-laws. The subject of the book is how to have a fulfilling relationship with your in-laws, but it also includes a chapter on the death of an in-law, prompted by the death of the author’s mother-in-law while writing this book. The author teaches the techniques of mind-shifting to strengthen all relationships. Her Christian faith serves as a foundation for her teaching and her personal relationships. This is a must-read for all married couples and those who are contemplating marriage.

Under The Tangerine Tree

This book was written for middle grade readers – I couldn’t put it down. It is well written and draws
you in at the very beginning. This young family goes through tragedy, hardship, and several major life events.
The characters are well developed, and their conversations and feelings are so real. I could relate to some
of the experiences Angie Mangione was going through with a major move. The Mangione family will never be the same and yet they will survive and thrive because of the love they share with each other.
There are some books that are written for a specific age group that will break the age barrier. This is one of them. Buy it for your middle grade daughter and read it after she has finished it. It will be a great experience to share your feelings with your kids about this book and how a family that sticks together though so much can thrive.

We published our review of Beauty Beyond The Thorns in the November 2021 issue of Faith On Every Corner magazine. This is the follow-on study guide that complements the book.
Darci Steiner knows pain. Hers results from a fall and a resulting nerve pain disorder and being re-injured years later. She has walked in faith through the injuries, medications, therapies, and life highs and lows. The author’s lifelong faith, determination, and thirst for knowledge of her physical condition have led her to a ministry to help others suffering from pain and disability. In her book, she weaves real-life situations with biblical passages and concludes that although we may be broken, by His wounds, Christ has already healed us.
The book, Beauty Beyond The Thorns, is divided into 30 Chapters which allow the reader to use the book in a daily devotional style, allowing the messages to be absorbed slowly with time for reflection and study. This companion study guide is wonderful for the individual and use in a small group setting.

Becoming God’s Epic is a call to dream and have visions—for the glory of God. This book leads the reader to not only absorb the knowledge, ideas, and examples the author provides but also return to the book many times for further study and application. I especially enjoyed the format of the book. The author deftly addresses dreams and visions in the Christian context, laying a firm and broad foundation and then building through the layers of developing and nourishing a passion for being a true disciple of Christ.
Within each chapter, the author provides areas to record reflections on what we have read and questions that help clarify the reader’s interaction with the book.

Our Foothills and Our Foothills II
By The Foothills Writers Reviewed by Craig Ruhl It is my pleasure to know several of the contributors to each of these anthologies. I am excited to recommend these collections of short stories, articles, poems, and glimpses into their individual lives. The format of each book makes them perfect to tuck into a book bag or have at hand to open and read a few pages when an opportunity occurs. Each of the writers is a member of the Foothill Writers, a local group of wordsmiths located in Caldwell County, NC. They meet regularly to support each other and hone their craft. This group knows how to write. In reading their collective words, I laughed and often pondered life from their individual points of view. It was a pleasure reading these two books and I hope the group continues to share their writing. Sown In Peace
By Joy Avery Melville Reviewed by Karen and Craig Ruhl Through this fictional tale, we learn of the very real physical and emotional trauma often endured by our men and women now serving or who have served in the military. Unfortunately, those traumas can last a lifetime. The author has done a remarkable job of weaving factual information about post-traumatic stress disorder and war-related injuries into a story of relationships, faith, courage, and hope for the future. The characters jump off the page and come to life through skillful writing, but also from the author’s commitment to research and understanding of the core issues behind the story. This book brings the reader in touch with many of the important issues our veterans and their families deal with daily. Not only is Sown In Peace a great read, it is a call to all Americans to understand the issues and become a part of the solution. We anxiously await the next book in this series. Understanding Your Husband
By Fredrick Ezeji-Okoye Reviewed by Craig Ruhl Having read and enjoyed the author’s previous books, Who Prays For The Pastor and Not Without The Head, I was anxiously awaiting this book to be published. It was well worth the wait. In his most recent book, Not Without The Head, the author explores the importance of the man as the head of the household. One of the critical roles of the head of household is as husband. This companion book explores that role from the viewpoint of the wife with an emphasis on helping women win in the pivotal battle of homes with absent husbands and fathers. Using Bible based truths, the author not only identifies problem areas, but he also provides suggestions and offers examples to strengthen the marital relationship and family as a whole. I believe every couple should read this book for a better understanding of their marital role. This book would also be very beneficial for unmarried men and women to read prior to marriage. We are pleased to include Understanding Your Husband on the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf and in our home bookcase. |
The Daily Kairos Journal
Reviewed by Craig Ruhl I originally downloaded the digital version of the Daily Kairos Journal, hoping I would find a simple and yet meaningful method of Christian journaling. In June of this year, shortly after beginning to use the journal, I requested a hardbound version of the journal to use and review. The team at Daily Kairos graciously provided a review copy with a Forest Green cover. For many years, I have maintained a habit of Bible verse journaling and I wanted to expand that to recording my Bible reading plans and progress, memory verses, prayers said and those answered. It was also important to have space to write down my thoughts as I spent time in the Word each day. The Daily Kairos Journal provides all of that and much more. The journal is sturdy as well as beautiful. The paper is very fountain pen friendly, which was important to me. Each journal includes space for 90 days of journaling, plus a wonderful section to record weekly reflections. There is even a section with Bible verse suggestions by topic. My experience in using this journal for 90 days was excellent. I like the format and the ease of use. The simple guide and instructions included in the journal are thorough and easy to understand. The journal lends itself to considerable personalization. Most importantly, The Daily Kairos Journal provides a solid framework for intentionally spending time each day with the Lord. The Daily Kairos Journal team is part of a young family-owned business. I recommend you give this journal a try! |

What Do I Say
When Asked About Jesus
By Dave Foucar
Reviewed by Craig Ruhl
Dave Foucar’s book, What Do I Say When Asked About Jesus? offers a wonderfully refreshing discussion about one of the basic tenants of Christianity. I often have been a bit intimidated by the subject of evangelism even after receiving church instruction and training for it. This book starts by looking at the ‘why’ of telling others about Jesus, moves through the preparation stages, and offers real-life encouragement and examples of sharing our faith and the gospel. I especially like the approach the author takes in his presentation; he teaches without preaching and does so in a friendly conversational manner. The book offers a series of thought-provoking questions at the end of the chapters that reinforce what we learned and promote reflection, making the book a valuable work or guidebook. Another feature of the book I consider valuable is the use of specific Bible citations to support the author’s thoughts and the handy reference section at the end of the book. This book will inspire those new to share their faith with others as well as those who need a refresher course.

Ko’olau’s Secret

In her latest novel, Koʻolau’s Secret, Sharon Connell has combined suspenseful action and mystery with romance and has placed the scene in one of the most beautiful and exotic settings—Hawaii. One of the author’s many strengths is the amount of research she puts into her writing, and this book doesn’t disappoint. As the story unfolds, you become immersed in the rich Hawaiian culture, history, and traditions. There is even an introductory help section on the unique native language and pronunciation of certain words used in the book. I’ll not give away the story line, however, the pace is quick, and the characters are well developed, providing a thrilling, and satisfying read. I particularly love that Sharon is a Christian fiction writer and her content is family safe. If this is your first introduction to the work of Sharon Connell, it will delight you to know she has many more novels and short stories to explore.
I loved this book and highly recommend it to our Faith On Every Corner readers!

I Never Knew You
by Patrick Higgins Reviewed by Craig Ruhl The title of this book first drew my attention; words I never want my Lord to say to me. Patrick Higgins weaves important biblical tenants into a story that closely describes many in today’s society who questionably consider themselves Christian. Although a work of fiction, the unveiling of prosperity preaching, false prophets, and religious persecution will strike a chord for many readers. The story is solid, and the character development is excellent. The ending is chilling and serves as a wake-up call to Christians that they must be certain they are in right standing with the Lord—now. I enjoyed this reading this book. It made me consider the theological teaching I have been consuming and the importance of wisdom and discernment in what I allow to enter my mind. The description of intolerance and persecution in a foreign county makes me very thankful to live in America. |

Have you ever just wanted to pick up a book and enjoy the read - maybe even get a chuckle or two? I found myself laughing out loud as I read this book. Marlene has a great sense of humor and uses it as she tells the stories of her life. There are times when you will get wrapped up in a story that is serious, but I guarantee Marlene finds a way to make you smile even through serious situations.
As I read the book, I would chuckle just thinking of similar things that my family may have done, or that I did as I was growing up and getting older.
We are thrilled to have this book on our bookshelf and will take it out to read it over and over again. I was sitting reading on my patio and a neighbor came over; I read a story to her and her daughter and they both left laughing and smiling. This would be a splendid book to give as a gift to brighten someone’s day.
Marlene also writes cozy mysteries - I cannot wait to read Place With A Past and review it for you. She is a columnist, southern humorist, and motivational speaker.

Intervention
By Charles De Andrade Reviewed by Craig Ruhl This second book in the Steward series continues the exciting saga of a war that is not fought in conventional terms but in spiritual realms. The setting is during the Vietnam war and details the events, politics, and emotions of that time which are woven into the fictional story. The author uses this technique to draw us in while we are enlightened and educated about the spiritual warfare we are experiencing in our lives. I related to the story as I was in the military during the story’s time period. The tale is great, and the characters are interesting and believable. As the title suggests, we are introduced to the concept of divine intervention. In this book, we learn that as the war between humans and demons rages, God’s grace and mercy are real and available to those He has chosen. Once again, Charles De Andrade delivers a thrilling novel filled with Christian insights and fast-paced action. We are pleased to recommend this book to our readers and have placed a copy on the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf. |

Turning Guilt Trips Into Joy Rides
By Shirley Brosius, Janine Boyer, and Kim Messinger
Reviewed by Karen Ruhl
The three co-authors have combined their thoughts, beliefs, and everyday solutions to the very real subject of guilt trips. The topics of God, Relationships, Acceptance, Challenges, and Emotions are organized as sections of the book. Each of the 183 daily entries includes a Bible verse that is not only applicable to that day’s entry but is also suitable to memorize and meditate on. A specific guilt trip is identified, followed by a brief topical devotion dealing with that day’s subject written by one of the three authors. The authors give a suggested solution called Take The Joy Ride at the end of each entry. I especially liked the short daily sections; they fit perfectly into my devotion time. This book is very well written, and I enjoy the different perspectives offered by the three authors.

David’s Faith
By Mary Jane Humes Reviewed by Karen and Craig Ruhl David’s Faith, by author Mary Jane Humes, is the first book in the Faith Series Devotionals. This 30-day devotional book provides a helpful daily format for studying God’s Word and applying the lessons learned to our daily lives. For each day, there is a reading plan, a specific verse for the day, and a Bible lesson. One day’s reading fits into a minimal time slot or expands by adding further study. Based on the life of King David, the author uses the study of his attributes, failings, experiences, and lessons to teach, encourage, and inspire the reader in their walk of faith. We both love to read Christian devotional books. They provide topical content that helps us focus during our special time with the Lord and in the Word. Although this book is written specifically for women, the content is equally suitable for men. This devotional study is an excellent part of our time spent daily with the Lord. We recommend David’s Faith to our readers and have placed a copy on the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf. |

Chosen

This is the second book I have read by author Charles De Andrade. This Christian fictional story primarily takes place in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during the Vietnam war. In this book, the first in the Steward Series, the author introduces the reader to the principal character, a member of the armed forces who possesses the biblical gifts of wisdom and discernment. While actively involved in armed combat, he also knows that the veritable war being waged is spiritual and not just physical. Weaving a wonderful love story into the conflict adds to the tension and makes the book hard to put down. I was aware of spiritual warfare before reading Chosen, but this story sparked my awareness and enhanced my discernment and wisdom of the battle taking place in heavenly realms. As an addition to biblical studies, Chosen makes an excellent personalization of the subject.
I enjoyed this well-written book and am becoming a Charles De Andrade fan, eager to read the next book in the series.
I highly recommend this book and we have placed a copy on the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf.

Cancel The Culture—Securing Our Identity as Christians
By Bishop Eric A. Lambert, Jr. With Chris McKinney Reviewed by Craig Ruhl We are living in turbulent times with our society making changes at breathtaking speed. How does a Christian live faithfully in today’s cultural environment? Cancel the Culture specifically addresses this dilemma and provides simple, although sometimes difficult, solutions that we can follow to counteract the negative effects of living in the world as we strive to follow Christ’s teachings. The author challenges us to engage in correcting and counteracting the influences of culture by committing to addressing one issue each month for one year. Each month a challenge is issued to resolve a specific conflict between our culture and the way Christians are called to live. Each chapter provides us with suggested activities to engage in and substantial biblical foundations for addressing these harmful cultural influences. I enjoyed this book, especially as it is written conversational, personal manner. This book is an essential tool that all Christians need to use to endure and overcome the spiritual battles we are engaged in daily. Redeem The Story: A Call to Let God Rewrite Your Story
By Aaron Joseph Hall Reviewed by Craig Ruhl The subject of redemption is core to our Christian beliefs. In Redeem The Story, the author addresses the truth that we all have a story, some better and some worse than we would like it to be. We are told throughout the book that our situation, belief, and behavior are not final and that Christ Jesus can redeem our lives through His grace and mercy. It challenges us throughout the book to allow God to rewrite our stories, not recreate, but create a whole new life for us. I enjoyed the way the author wrote this book. Throughout, the author shares insights from his life story and examples of other people’s stories and testimonies, including substantiating biblical references. Those who struggle with their past and present will find the message in Redeem The Story to be both encouraging and empowering. Eyewitness–The Risen Saints
By Charles De Andrade Reviewed by Craig Ruhl Eyewitness–The Risen Saints is an endearing story, combining one miracle Jesus performed while on earth with a tale of the journey an old man and young boy take together as they face impending death. The story of the biblical character, Lazarus, weaves throughout the book as each of them learns the extent of God’s grace and mercy. Charles De Andrade is masterful at bringing Lazarus’s story to life, written in the first person, and read in current times. It is interesting to read how the biblical figure might have described his life and the miracle performed by his friend, Jesus Christ. The relationships between the old man and the boy, and their families and medical teams are well developed and add to the lesson of hope being taught. This is an especially encouraging and uplifting book, and I recommend it highly. We have placed a copy of Eyewitness–The Risen Saints on the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf. |
Rich Beasts & Poore Mansions
By Jerry A. Davidson Reviewed by Craig and Karen Ruhl This novella differs from most stories—excellently. Jerry Davidson has written a unique murder mystery told from the perspectives of the seven characters, devoting a chapter to each. The story is told using an “Old English” style of dialog mixed with more modern terminology. As each chapter flows into the next, the first-person perspective smoothly shifts from one character’s point of view to another’s. The author provides thought-provoking aspects to the unique personalities involved, comparing the values, and ethics, and morals of each. Interestingly, as the author set the story in a period mansion complete with a butler and many rooms, it reminds of the board game, Clue. This is a splendid book to curl up with in front of the fireplace. We have added a copy of this book to the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf and recommend it to our subscribers. I Touched The Hem Of His Garment By Vini Tejas Pandya Reviewed by Craig and Karen Ruhl I Touched The Hem Of His Garment is a wonderful collection of devotional poems that bring the reader into a closer relationship with God. Each chapter contains relevant Bible verses followed by the author’s original poetry. The poems and songs perfectly suit the Bible verses. When read as a devotional, the poetry and song encourage reflection and meditation on our relationship with the Lord. We particularly like the way the book interweaves Scripture and poetry through thirty-seven easy-to-read chapters. The last two chapters offer the author’s testimony and her thoughts on her faith. I Touched The Hem Of His Garment makes an impressive addition to our study and devotion materials. We are pleased to add a copy to the Faith On Every Corner Bookshelf. |

To further aid the reader’s understanding, this book includes the testimonies of several men who share how they missed filling the role of head of the family. They describe the mistakes they made and how they successfully changed to become the true head of the family.

Who Prays for the Pastor
Who Prays for the Pastor shines a light on the areas of pastoral life that are most susceptible to attack. It addresses the prominent reasons for stress, illness, marital discord, and financial failure pastors often endure. Each chapter looks at a specific need and discusses how it affects the pastor, often including examples from the author’s personal experience as a married pastor and faith leader with children. These are trying times for our church leaders as their faith, dedication, values, and core beliefs are questioned and even challenged. This book provides encouragement for the pastor and those under their ministerial care. It also enables the pastors to better understand the stresses and challenges they experience in their ministerial lives so they can share with others and ask for prayer and help.
As I read this book, I had a better understanding of our pastor’s needs and felt more equipped to pray for them, their families, and their ministries. The Faith On Every Corner staff has added this book to our bookshelf and we recommend you add it to yours.

In each chapter, the author addresses specific areas of our lives where we often fall short of the potential our Creator gifted us with. As she discusses these issues, she references biblical passages that help explain and reinforce her comments, suggestions, and solutions. By drawing on her experience as a full-time clinical therapist and lifelong athlete, she connects with the reader by describing real-life experiences, failures, and triumphs she has encountered in her practice and her own life. At the end of each chapter, there are questions for the reader to reflect on. This feature makes this book an excellent resource for small group discussions.
I recommend this wonderful book to men and women alike since life’s trials are not bound by gender.

Glorified Un-Expectations: Trusting God for His Unfailing Faith, Hope, and Love by Kerri Gene Daniels, is the story of a wife and mother’s journey through life’s most painful and trying times and events. Kerri is a devoted Christian woman who called on the strength and protection of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, over and over as she and her husband, Rick, navigated physical, emotional, and spiritual trials over many years. This is a beautifully written book in the memoir tradition. After telling her story, Kerri shares her actual journal entries from a 30-day period when circumstances were extremely challenging but also revealed the faithfulness of the Lord. Throughout her book, Kerri has included Bible verses which provided her with added strength and increased her faith in the Lord. We felt the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit as we read Kerri’s words and believe her book will equally bless you.

Hobble: From Ai to Bethel

In her book, The Hobble: From Ai to Bethel, Andrea Marino tells the story of a woman’s journey of faith through life’s challenges and pitfalls. The prologue of the book shares the first three verses from the book of Isaiah, Chapter 2, where the mountain of the Lord is described. The Hobble storyline follows Electra’s sometimes difficult struggles with her faith and her interaction with the other characters presented along the path. She finds that God’s love is all-encompassing, and salvation is available and attainable. Each of us has our own “hobble” in our lives, and the author provides a wonderful testimony to how Electra overcame hers. This is an exceptional book and we at Faith On Every Corner recommend you place it on your bookshelf too. ~Craig
I am currently reading The Hobble and enjoying the journey from Ai to Bethel. The book surprised me with its contemporary setting. Andrea quickly pulls you into the story-line where you will want to linger!
